What is distinctive about the human organism? From molecular genetics to evolutionary anthropology, the answer today is often, "less than we thought." As we approach the capability not just to understand, but to reengineer the human being, the question is an urgent one: if animals are so like us — genetically, biologically, and even behaviorally — then what are we, and what ought we to be?
